Voith wins equipment supply orders for hydropower plants in India and Nepal

Voith has been awarded two contracts, worth more than €23m, for the delivery of equipment in support of two hydropower plants in India and Nepal.

Under the contract, the compan will supply complete electromechanical equipment for three generating units at the Rasuwaghadi hydropower plant in Nepal as well as upgrading a total of six turbine runners at the Salal hydroelectric project in India.

Work under the contracts will conducted by Voith Hydro in India.

Under the first contract, Voith will supply a complete water-to-wire solution which includes three 37MW vertical Francis turbines, the generators as well as automation systems and balance-of-plant equipment for the Rasuwaghadi plant.

Being developed by the Rasuwaghadi Hydropower, a unit of state-owned Nepal Electricity Authority, the Rasuwaghadi facility is located in the North of Nepal, around 150km from Kathmandu.

Voith will also supply and provide service works for installation of six new runners at the Salal hydroelectric plant on the river Chenab in Northern India, as part of the second contract.

Originally installed between 1987 and 1995, the runners will be refurbishment due to erosion damages caused by the silt prone waters of the Himalayan Rivers.

Voith Hydro’s workshop will develop six runners in Vadodara, India.

The Asia Pacific region’s hydropower potential is estimated at more than 1,750GW, of which only around 25% already having been developed.

The technically feasible hydropower potential is in Nepal is estimated about 40,000MW, of which less than 2% has been developed so far.
