EnBW commences Baltic 2 operations officially in Germany

Germany-based Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG (EnBW) has officially commenced operations of it second offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The 288MW EnBW Baltic 2 has 80 wind turbines and is capable of generating electricity for approximate 340,000 households per year.

According to the company the offshore wind farm will supply 1.2bn KW hours of electricity annually amounting to 900,000tn of carbon dioxide savings.

EnBW CEO Frank Mastiaux said: "We want to expand renewable energies to make them one of the main pillars of our business. The commissioning of EnBW Baltic 2 is another milestone in the implementation of our EnBW 2020 strategy. And is further evidence that the remodelling of the energy supply system towards decentralisation and renewable energies is irreversible, not only in Germany but also around the world."

The wind turbines are installed over an area of 27 sq km and rise above 138m water surface depending on the water depths.

More than 83km of undersea cables are connected via substation. The electricity generated from the individual turbines flows into this substation for high voltage transformations. It is then transported to the mainland for use in integrated country’s electricity network.

The company has three other pipelined projects in the North Sea capable of producing around 1600MW output.
