ABB to provide power infrastructure for Brazilian wind farms

ABB has received a contract from Brazil-based renewables company Casa dos Ventos for the supply of substations and related power infrastructure to facilitate integration of renewable energy to the country’s power transmission grid.

Under the $30m contract, ABB will provide power infrastructure to allow integration of power from two new wind complexes, which include 216MW São Clemente and 130MW Tianguá, into the grid.

The company said it will also provide the 230kV and 69kV air-insulated switchgear substations including compact 34.5kV substations with distribution transformers, connection bays and overhead lines.

Additionally, ABB will deliver reclosers circuit breakers which will reduce the disruptions impact resulting from the integration of intermittent wind power into the grid.

ABB Power Systems division president Claudio Facchin said: "These substations and related infrastructure will facilitate the integration, transmission and distribution of clean wind energy to serve growing electricity needs in the region.

"They will also help strengthen grid reliability and secure power supplies. This order is a further example of ABB’s Next Level Strategy and our focus on expanding in growing markets."

The projects, upon completion in 2016, will generate clean electricity required to power about 300,000 local households and will also reduce annual CO2 emission of approximately 325.000 tons.

The São Clemente and Tianguá will wind complexes are located in the states of Pernambuco and Ceará.
