Suez to build four wastewater treatment plants in Porec, Croatia for €22m

French company Suez has signed a contract with Porec’s water agency for designing and constructing four wastewater treatment plants in the city with an investment of €22m.

European Union is one of the partners in the contract, which total value is €38m.

The project is estimated to be completed by 2017.

The four wastewater treatment plants to be constructed under the project are fitted with membrane bioreactors and can cover around 137,500 populations.

Agricultural irrigation sector will be benefitted from the treated water to be produced from the project.

There is also a provision for the construction of another 62km of wastewater networks, the treatment of 23km of the current network and the construction of 52 pumping stations.

Suez’s composting units or the heat of the Sun will help recovering the sludge from the wastewater treatment.

Suez international division senior executive vice president Marie-Ange Debon said: "SUEZ is supporting Croatia in its drive to modernise its infrastructures and, at the same time, is helping to protect the coastline and the natural ecosystem."

Porec is located in Istria, a region on the Adriatic coast and a popular tourist destination. During peak holiday seasons, its population increases from 24,000 to 115,000.

The local authority with the help of European Union has started a programme to develop the town’s wastewater treatment infrastructures.

Suez has facilities in Balkans and Central Europe including Maribor (Slovenia), Budapest, Prague and Warsaw.
