Hydro-Québec and Eversource to supply hydropower to New England region

Hydro-Québec and Eversource Energy has teamed up to build the Northern Pass Transmission project, which will supply 1,000MW of hydropower from Québecto New England region in the US.

The partnership is aimed at solving New England’s energy challenges by increasing clean energy trade between the Northeast US and Eastern Canadian electricity markets.

The project cost is estimated to be around $1.4bn, and it has already received its draft Environmental Impact Statement from the US Department of Energy.

The Clean energy from Hydro-Québec is expected to help solve the energy challenges faced by the New England power system by switching its power source to renewable from current dependence on natural gas.

The project is expected to cut energy cost and much-needed clean, reliable energy to the region.

Hydro-Québec is reportedly pursuing permitting process to construct a transmission line in Canada to connect its generation to Northern Pass at the border.

Hydro-Québec CEO Eric Martel said: "Eversource will be our partner in the offering of new, clean energy that will be delivered to the New England power system through the innovative approach of the Clean Energy RFP.

"We are confident that the Northern Pass project will be the leading solution for delivering significant reliability, environmental, and economic benefits to both New England and Eastern Canada."
