E.ON commissions Amrumbank West offshore wind farm in German North Sea

E.ON, a Germany-based power company, has commissioned the €1bn Amrumbank West offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The offshore wind farm with a capacity of 288MW is situated 40km off the Helgoland island, where the operations and maintenance center of the wind farm is located.

The wind farm project, which features 80 units of Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines, would be capable of generating clean energy that will be enough to provide power to around 300,000 households annually and reduce more than 740,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Construction of the facility began in January 2014 and the first turbine began generating power in May 2015.

E.ON management board member Bernhard Reutersberg said: "We’ve commissioned two large offshore wind farms – Amrumbank West and Humber Gateway off the U.K. coast – in just one year.

"Both were completed on time and on budget, which underscores our ability to expand renewables."

The company is also set to begin construction on the 400MW Rampion offshore wind farm off the south coast of England by next January.

E.ON and its three partner organizations are field testing wireless, inductive charging for electric vehicles (EV) in and around Berlin, Germany.

This technology has been provided by SEW Eurodrive and can tranmit energy through magnetic field created between inductive coils mounted in a floor pad and on the underside of the vehicle.

It is being supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety.
