BHEL commissions fifth 68MW unit at Rampur hydro project in India

Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has commissioned the fifth 68MW hydro generating unit at at the Rampur hydroelectric project on the Satluj River in the Himachal Pradesh state of India.

Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh state, is developing the project, which is expected to generate approximately 1,770.68GW of electricity per year.

BHEL commissioned the first four units between March 2014 and June 2014 for the 412MW hydro power plant and the sixth and last unit is due to be commissioned shortly.

For the project, BHEL’s work scope includes supply, erection and commissioning of six 68 MW Francis turbines operating at a head of 119m with matching synchronous generators of 200rpm, static excitation system, main inlet valves, digital governors, state-of-the-art control & monitoring system (SCADA), associated station auxiliaries, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and electrical & mechanical Balance of Plant (BoP).

Designed to work in tandem with the upstream 1500 MW Natpha Jhakri project, the Rampur hydroelectric project will improve the reliability of India’s Northern electricity grid through the addition of renewable, low carbon energy from the Rampur hydropower project.

Comprising a head race tunnel, tail race tunnel, penstocks, power house, power evacuation system, and other components, the Rampur project will also improve the effectiveness of SJVN with respect to the preparation and safe implementation of economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable hydropower projects.
