Mersen Pioneers Safety and Reliability Solutions for Hydro Generators

Hydro power plants drive electric generators, which produce high-voltage AC power for the grid. These generators consist of two main components, a wound rotor (rotating part) driven by water turbine, running inside a stator (stationary part).

The DC excitation current is supplied to the collector assembly, which in turn passes current into the rotor through a collector system comprising slip rings, brush-holders and carbon brushes. This technology using carbon brushes permits to quickly obtain the required power corresponding to the grid demand (peak).

Electrical brush machines comprise 'wear' parts (carbon brushes, brush-holders), but this apparent inconvenience may, in fact, turn out to be an asset, in permitting predictive maintenance.
